I'm not so sure about the resistance to less in business is about trust.
It takes more effort to remove things then to add to what already exists. Adding a couple of steps to a process - hardly anyone complains or feel threathend. Removing a couple of steps and you might need to change a system, remove people and create new connections.

Controversial but related take: My favorite directly is Christopher Nolan, but his movies have trended worse as he has been given larger budgets.
Memento is a masterpiece as are some of his subsequent films. But I found Interstellar and especially Tenet, to be extremely wanting.
There is power in less, in the right hands.
